One of the life stories shared on May 3 is the story of Ephraim (Eddy) Behr. He was born on March 5, 1905 into a Jewish family in Assen. Ephraim studied medicine in Groningen. He obtained his PhD on ‘Blood platelets and thrombosis’. In May 1940 he ended up as a reserve officer in the fighting for the Grebbe Line and was killed at the age of 35 while, according to a witness, ‘with compassion and bravery he attempted to evacuate some wounded soldiers from the Grebbe Line to safer places. ‘. Ephraim Behr’s life took place in both Groningen and Assen. On May 3 at 2 p.m., history student Ilse Engels will share his story in the University Museum in Groningen and on May 4, historian Renske van Donk will tell his story in Assen at Torenlaan 9.

Resistance stories

The people who actively resisted the occupying forces during the Second World War are also commemorated. In the Jerusalem Church, Harm Bolt will talk at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. about Jan Dijkenga who was in hiding here. Klaas Niemeijer tells at Parklaan 8 at 12.30 and 2.30 pm about the secret transmitter that was discovered here by the Security Service in November 1944.
