More and more people have a motorcycle, especially those over 65 | Economy

The Netherlands had a total of 703,000 motorcycles on January 1. That was 9 percent more than five years earlier and almost 2 percent more than at the beginning of 2023. 108,000 of these were in the name of someone aged 65 or older. This number has increased by more than half in five years.

The increase in the number of elderly people on motorcycles is also reflected in driving license ownership. The number of people over 65 with a motorcycle license has increased by 28 percent in five years to 370,000.

It is not only people in their sixties who use such a two-wheeler. According to CBS, 75 to 85 year olds in particular are increasingly likely to have a motorcycle to their name. At seventeen thousand, this was 80 percent more than at the beginning of 2019.

It is also striking that older motorcyclists also more often ride an old motorcycle. More than a quarter of the motorcycles of people over 65 are forty years or older.

It became clear earlier that motorcycle sales have increased significantly in the past year. According to RAI Association and BOVAG, it was even the best sales year since at least 2010.

“Although motorcycling is often associated with fun and relaxation, it is increasingly seen as a serious alternative to cars or public transport, especially when commuting,” the trade associations say. Last year they counted 17,501 new motorcycles that were registered. That is 13 percent more than a year earlier.
