The residents of the Lombok district of Utrecht will celebrate the liberation again this year on Sunday, May 5, with the famous Lombok Street Parties. Hundreds of Lombokers sell their second-hand or homemade goods at the flea market. Street orchestras provide the music and the Bankaplein playground is buzzing with children’s activities. The street parties start at 8 a.m. and last until 5 p.m.

The flea market in the streets between Abel Tasmanstraat, Kanaalstraat, Leidsekade and Billitonkade is one of the largest and busiest in Utrecht. The market is also known as one of the nicest. Thousands of visitors watch from early in the morning until late in the afternoon to see if there is something to their liking. Only second-hand or home-made items are sold on the market. Traders are not welcome in the neighborhood. Only people from the streets and neighborhoods involved with permission from the organization are on the market.
The Utrecht samba band Oladom and the Swing Dixieland Band provide the music on the street. Playground Bankaplein has various children’s activities. Ungertheater Link will also take a surprising parade through the streets together with local children.
The liberation celebration in Lombok is made possible with the support of the Initiatives Fund of the municipality of Utrecht and many volunteers from the neighborhood.
