Editorial, TPO, April 26, 2024 – In the Flevopolder-Gelderland-Utrecht region, pressure on the electricity grid has increased rapidly, as a result of which previously announced measures to expand the network faster and use it more intelligently are being accelerated, reports the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate.

Significant pressure on the electricity grid

Dutch households, companies and organizations are rapidly accelerating their sustainability efforts. The ministry experiences this as a positive development for the energy transition and it would also reduce dependence on foreign countries. However, this acceleration also puts significant pressure on the electricity grid.

Grid operators investigate per region which (additional) measures are needed to guarantee the reliability of the electricity grid, maintain sufficient space for households and housing, and, if possible, create space for companies.

However, in the Flevopolder-Gelderland-Utrecht region, the demand for space on the power grid is growing faster than the grid operators can expand the grid, despite significant investments. A number of measures will initially be applied in Utrecht.

Temporary extra electricity production

In addition to batteries, temporary additional electricity production installations can also be deployed to solve the bottlenecks on the electricity grid. These can assist at times of high demand for electricity in the region.

In addition, grid operators are investigating the possibility of temporarily placing a heavier load on the existing power grid, creating more space until the grid is expanded.

Encouraging flexibility in companies and the smarter use of charging stations and heat pumps are also part of the measures to reduce pressure on the electricity grid and promote sustainability.
