With a good glass of red or white in your hand and the sun on your head, you look out over the rolling hills of a vineyard. Are you in France? South Africa maybe? No, for such an experience you can also simply sit down at one of these vineyards in the Netherlands. With more than two hundred wine estates, there is a lot of choice in your own country.

1. Betuws Wijndomein: award-winning Dutch vineyard

The Betuwe Wijndomein won prizes in several categories at the Wine Inspection of the Low Countries in 2023. The best white, red, sweet and semi-sparkling wines? According to this election, you drink them all at this vineyard in the middle of the Netherlands.

2. Wijngaard de Frysling: the northernmost vineyard in the Netherlands

The winegrowers of Wijngaard de Frysling, the northernmost vineyard in the Netherlands, prove that you don’t have to travel south for a good glass of wine. These winemakers also won prizes at the wine inspection of the Low Countries in 2023. The jury was particularly impressed by the sparkling wines from Friesland.

3. St. Martinus wine estate in Limburg: largest vineyard in the Netherlands

With 28 hectares between the rolling Limburg hills, Wijndomein St. Martinus is the largest vineyard in the Netherlands. Since 1986, these Limburg wine growers have been making red, white, rosé and sparkling wines. During harvest time, in September and October, you can roll up your sleeves during the picker’s days. But of course you can also just taste wine at this Dutch vineyard.

4. Tasting wine with the nuns of the St. Catherine’s Monastery

In Oosterhout in Brabant you can taste a white wine or a glass of rosé with the nuns of the St. Catherine’s Monastery. In the garden of this monastery there is a vineyard the size of about ten football fields. Grapes for white wine and a light-colored rosé are mainly harvested here. And these are good for about forty thousand bottles of wine every year.

5. From France to Wijngoed Wolf in Brabant

You will find relatively many vineyards in the south of the Netherlands. This also applies to Wijngoed Wolf, which is located near Den Bosch. Owners Laura de Hollander and Bas Klerx followed winemaking training in Provence and worked for various vineyards in France before opening Wijngoed Wolf. Here you will taste wine from a mix of classic grape varieties, such as Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, and newer varieties that thrive in the Dutch climate.

6. Tasting wine in the Achterhoek at Wijngaard Hesselink

As a wine lover you can also indulge yourself in the Achterhoek. One of the best vineyards in this part of the Netherlands is Wijngaard Hesselink, which has won various wine awards for several years in a row. During a tour and tasting you can choose from more than twenty different Achterhoek wines.

7. Wijngaard Apostelhoeve around the corner from Maastricht

Finally, a tip for wine tasters in the south: at the Apostelhoeve vineyard you really feel like you are on holiday abroad because of the beautiful location. The grapes grow here on top of the Louwberg and are later transformed into delicious dry white wines or a glass of bubbles.

Does this Dutch wine tour leave you wanting more? Here you will find the most beautiful wine regions in Germany. And as a real wine fanatic, this Italian village with a non-stop wine fountain is the place to be.
