The wolf does not belong in Zeeland. That is the message from the Board of Provincial Executive. But the wolf is protected in Europe. That is why measures are needed to protect farm animals against the wolf. Reason for the Province of Zeeland to now make a subsidy amount of 95,000 euros available.
The Zeeland provincial government not only believes it is important that farm animal owners protect their animals, it is also legally required. ‘The Animals Act states, among other things, that an animal, if it is not kept in a building, must be offered protection by the holder against bad weather conditions, health risks and, if necessary, predators.’
Flapper ribbons
Owners can use the subsidy to take measures, such as purchasing so-called Turbo-fladry ribbons. These flapper ribbons have a woven metal wire that is supplied with electricity to protect against the wolf. Another option is to purchase, with a subsidy, fixed or movable fences with live wires.
Opening of subsidy
A total of 95,000 euros in subsidy is therefore available. Applications can be submitted from May 15 to September 30, 2024. The subsidy pot is intended for all ungulates (except pigs) and for both professional animal keepers and hobby keepers.
‘Be prepared’
With this subsidy, the Province of Zeeland anticipates the arrival of a (possible) established wolf or more damage from wandering wolves. In provinces that previously had to deal with the wolf, they waited for an established wolf or repeated attacks before providing subsidies. Responsible deputy Wilfried Nielen is happy with the joint decision of the Provincial Executive. ‘Of course we would prefer to fight the wolf, but that is not allowed. That is why I call on every animal owner to take protective measures and participate in this scheme. Be prepared, together we will do what we can.’
