Novar, the Groningen developer of sustainable energy systems, will develop and build a large solar park in the German state of Lower Saxony.

It is the first project in Germany for the company, which has the ambition to become big in Europe. Novar (formerly Solarfields) has taken over the development of the plan from Hamburg industry peer WiNRG.

Gerben Smit, CEO of Novar, speaks of ‘a milestone in our international growth’. “Germany offers significant opportunities for the development of renewable energy,” he says.

50,000 households

The capacity of the solar park will be at least 91MWp, but can increase to 156 MWp (which can provide 50,000 households with sustainable electricity). According to Merijn Havinga, who is involved in foreign projects at Novar, this is the maximum capacity that the local electricity network can handle.

According to him, whether the solar park will actually reach that size depends on the further land transactions required for the project. Construction of the solar park is expected to start in the second quarter of 2026.

Investment company

Novar was founded in 2015 by Smit and Jelmer Pijlman. It developed solar parks under the name Solarfields. It increasingly focused on sustainable energy systems in a broad sense. In 2023, the name changed to Novar and the company became 60 percent owned by investment company DIF Capital Partners.

Novar announced on that occasion that it wanted to cross the border. It recently opened an office in Sweden, Germany and France will follow shortly.
