Fire brigade still busy extinguishing fire in Oss, local residents not yet home | Domestic

The fire brigade will pull apart the still smoldering remains on Sunday, the safety region says. This allows more oxygen to reach the fire and causes fires to flare up again. Fat from food also fuels the flames.

The fire broke out in the night from Thursday to Friday around 4:30 am in the Vice Versa distribution center in the Brabant municipality. This happened in a large cold room where it was -20 degrees.

After the first extinguishing work, the fire seemed to be under control on Friday morning, but then the fire flared up again. About 250 firefighters were deployed to bring the fire under control. The fire lasted a long time due to the size of the warehouse and because all food was stacked on pallets and in racks several meters high.

Extinguishing the fire also proved difficult. Because the fire extinguishing water froze, it was slippery and it was difficult for emergency services to do their work. The fire brigade ultimately opted for the “burn down scenario”. In such a situation, the fire brigade allows a building to burn out in a controlled manner and ensures that the fire does not spread to adjacent buildings.

The fire released a lot of smoke. It was therefore too dangerous for residents of the adjacent Vechtstraat to spend the past few nights at home. It is still unclear whether they can go home on Sunday. The municipality will inform them about this later today.

No hazardous substances were released during the fire. However, small particles from solar panels have blown into the environment. Those particles ended up kilometers away, even in Nijmegen.

The municipality of Oss advises people to clean up the particles with kitchen gloves, because they can be sharp. It is also recommended to wash your hands afterwards.
