The bestseller Joe Speedboat is distributed free throughout the month of November to promote reading. Tommy Wieringa’s novel has been chosen by the Collective Propaganda of the Dutch Book Foundation (CPNB) as the central book of the 19th edition of the library campaign Heel Nederland Leest, an action to bring people together by reading the same book.
The 2005 book is being released in a free edition especially for the campaign. “In November, the whole of the Netherlands will read the same book. This brings people together and increases social cohesion,” says director Eveline Aendekerk about the campaign. “This nineteenth edition of the campaign is perhaps more needed now than ever before. That’s why I’m extra happy that we work with Tommy Wieringa’s Joe Speedboat going to read a hell of a novel.”
Wieringa hopes that the campaign will entice people into the adventure of literature.
On Monday it was announced that the filming of the film adaptation of Joe Speedboat have now started. Tobias Kersloot plays the leading role, other roles are for Daan Buringa, QiQi van Boheemen, Hadewych Minis, Janni Goslinga, Ramses van Hall, Rogier Schippers and Abbie Chalgoum. The book tells the story of Fransje Hermans, who loses his ability to speak after an accident and ends up in a wheelchair. His life seems over until he meets Joe Speedboot. The novel has sold almost half a million copies.
