The university’s new rules ensure that new demonstrations are restricted, the GSb says. The university board believes that such actions are becoming increasingly harsh.
Prohibitions and house rules
The RUG introduced a ban on demonstrations after seven o’clock in the evening, a ban on unaddressed flyers and a ban on disrupting classes and ceremonies. Students were given house rules and must always enter into discussions with the RUG board. The university board also wants no more filming or photography during a demonstration. But after the University Council expressed criticism about this, the rule has been deleted again.
In violation of freedom of expression
The GSb is not happy with these developments. Ken Hesselink, chairman of the GSb, explains that these rules conflict with freedom of expression and therefore put pressure on the right to demonstrate. An educational institution such as the RUG must provide opportunities for discussions and demonstrations. And that is not possible with these new rules according to the GSb.
A petition has now been started against the rules. “With this petition we hope to show that more people do not agree with the new rules,” Hesselink said.
