On Friday, May 24, the University of Groningen will award an honorary doctorate to, among others, meteorologist Gerrit Hiemstra, the former weatherman for the NOS Journaal.

The honor is due to his “exceptional achievements as an expert in the field of meteorology and (the consequences of) climate change,” according to the educational institution.

Gerrit Hiemstra is co-owner of Weather Impact, focused on innovative solutions in the field of weather and climate, and co-founder of Oarshûs, which promotes the sustainable construction of houses. He is not the only one to receive an honorary doctorate, there are three others. These are Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Ghebreyesus, economist Mariana Mazzucato and artificial intelligence researcher Kate Crawford.

Ghebreyesus is being honored for his “commitment and dedication as Director-General of WHO in combating pandemics such as the coronavirus.” Mazzucato will receive an honorary doctorate for her “achievements as an economist in the areas of technological change, the role of the public sector in innovation and the concept of value in the economy.”

She is a professor at University College London. Crawford will receive the honorary doctorate for her work “as a researcher in the field of social change and media technology, specifically in the field of artificial intelligence and its impact.” She is affiliated with the University of Southern California and has also published articles in The New York Times.
