New millionaires who have made their money with AI dominate Quote’s list of youngest self-made millionaires in the Netherlands. There are at least seven young tech entrepreneurs who are working on artificial intelligence. Not surprising, since a lot of money is being invested in technology at the moment, says tech investor Eva de Mol. “It would be strange if you didn’t see this shift.”

According to De Mol, also co-founder of investment company CapitalT, it is a ‘result of certain trends’ that there are so many new AI millionaires in the list. She also refers to the high valuations that companies that work with AI receive. ‘With AI, certain companies are built that are very valuable and also solve certain problems.’

Preventing forest fires

The list includes entrepreneurs who are involved in collecting data using AI. An entrepreneur who helps medical scientists with research guided by AI is also one of the AI millionaires in the list. There is also an acquaintance of De Mol in the list, namely Indra den Bakker. His company Overstory, in which De Mol’s company invests, tries to prevent forest fires with AI. ‘Forest fires can be prevented based on analyzing satellite data using AI.’

It is striking that the total assets of young self-made millionaires have shrunk by three billion euros, to approximately 5.4 billion euros. De Mol emphasizes that the ratings that Quote gives to entrepreneurs do not mean that they can ‘swim in money’. “A lot of these valuations are on the books.”

Social impact

De Mol expects that more such AI millionaires will emerge in the future, due to all the rapid developments in this field. However, it is not just about the money, says De Mol. ‘In the spirit of the times in which we live, it is not just about financial success. Employees don’t just want to work at companies that focus on unicorn status. You need broader social success to bind people to you, and I have high expectations of that.’
