The municipality of Utrecht is once again removing plants placed by residents from public spaces

--

Local residents have planted trees and shrubs on the lawn in front of the Gamma on the Vleutenseweg in Utrecht. The municipality has not given permission for this planting. The planters therefore have until May 13 to remove the greenery. The exact same thing happened a few months ago, when the municipality also removed the greenery.

The municipality manages the lawn at the Gamma. No trees or shrubs may be planted in public spaces without permission. The trees and shrubs planted there by local residents must therefore be removed. This is possible until May 13, after which the municipality will remove them.

Removed again

Be on the green strip along the Vleutenseweg a few months ago even trees and plants have been removed. The municipality then indicated that a so-called self-management agreement must be concluded for the larger fields. According to the municipality, when concluding such an agreement, agreements can be made about, among other things, the design of the greenery.

Exotic plants

With this agreement, the municipality wants to prevent the installation of exotic plants that do not suit the local ecosystem and are at the expense of the biodiversity of Utrecht’s nature. A few months ago there were palm and olive trees, among other things. Now there are palm trees in the ground again.

Because the residents had not concluded a self-management agreement at the time, the municipality removed all greenery from local residents. Trees and plants have now been planted again, although local residents have not yet made any agreements with the municipality.

Until then, no trees and plants may be placed on the green strip in front of the Gamma. Local residents have until May 13 to remove the newly installed greenery. However, they can still apply for the so-called self-management agreement.
