During Ascension Day there are plenty of opportunities to go out in the city and the province. A number of shops in the city center and the furniture boulevards of Groningen are open between 12 noon and 5 p.m. Below are some tips for those who don’t want to shop.

Ascension market in Eenrum

Today you can visit the 45th Ascension Market, a household name in Eenrum and the surrounding area. Every year, approximately 120 stalls are set up in the streets of Eenrum, and all kinds of other activities can be seen, such as the Eenrumer mill De Lelie, various galleries and the Eenrumer tower. There is also musical entertainment, such as live music from the Eenrumer cafés and a stage with performances. The market is now a household name and attracts more than 20,000 visitors every year. National Steam Train Day

Today on Ascension Day is National Steam Train Day. All kinds of different trains run at the STAR on this day, and there are additional activities with the theme of general cargo transport. ‘How parcel transport was arranged in the past, help with delivering parcels’. All children can help with the transport of parcels. A behind-the-scenes look at railway work is also on display. The ‘fireless’ steam locomotive also comes into action at the railway yard in Stadskanaal. In addition to the steam train, there is also a historic diesel train. Sore week

The 31st Snikkeweek in Musselkanaal can be visited with the theme ‘Land in Sight’. This week is organized annually in honor of the barge, also called snik or snikke in Groningen, which was put into use last century for the removal of peat.

The event is all about boating recreation and many skippers are present. The Snikkeweek has an extensive programme. There are also many activities today with a musical festival, bouncy castles, walking on the water, a fishing competition for youth and more.

Program full of activities and plant market at Familiepark Nienoord

On Ascension Day, Thursday, May 9, many activities are planned in Familiepark Nienoord. With extra steam trains, street theater, a bouncy castle and kids bingo. There are also performances by LaLaLoes with cheerful and educational songs.

Nienoord Family Park is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This year you can visit the plant market again on the square in front of the Nienoord Information Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
