Staatsbosbeheer has temporarily diverted three sections of equestrian routes over the Aekingerzand (Kale Duinen) near Hoogersmilde. There is a herd of Exmoor ponies in the area and the stallion of the herd does not like other horses in his environment.

Walkers and cyclists in the area are not in danger, but the stallion does seek confrontation with riders of other horses.

“The moment is extra annoying, but at the moment we see no other solution that can guarantee safety for the riders and their horses for now. The stallion running in the herd is currently showing behavior that is certainly not desired” , Staatsbosbeheer said. Land owner Staatsbosbeheer will talk to the owner of the Exmoor ponies and the riders to find a solution.

The landowner mainly wants to know what stimuli cause the stallion to exhibit this behavior. “The common goal of all of us is that everyone can safely enjoy this piece of nature again as soon as possible.”

Staatsbosbeheer does not yet know what the solution to the problem is. The Exmoor ponies ensure grazing in the area and the stallion must provide protection against the wolf that roams the area. The land manager also does not know when the bridle paths can open again.
