A 21-year-old Amsterdam resident is suspected of being involved in the fraud of more than twenty elderly people. He is said to have tracked down the victims through his work as a temporary employee in a company’s customer service department.

The police suspect that he shared the personal information with others, with or without payment. Together with the others, he was then allegedly guilty of fraud and theft from homes. Victims were called and visited at home by people posing as police officers or employees of a telecom company.

In most cases, criminals of similar chatter schemes use personal data obtained on the dark web. According to the Public Prosecution Service (OM), this is the first time in Amsterdam that a customer service employee is believed to have deliberately used personal data from the customer base for fraud.

“It appears that data from the company’s database was used to select victims from across the country, gain their trust and then take money and goods from them,” the Public Prosecution Service said. The company has filed a report against the man for computer trespassing.

The Amsterdammer was arrested on April 22. His phones were confiscated upon his arrest. The police then found photos with personal data of very elderly customers of the company.
