Of the 15,370 homes in Hof van Twente, 270 were empty at the beginning of this year, according to provisional figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics. That is 1.8 percent of the total housing stock: less than the average in the Netherlands, but as much as the average in Overijssel.
Of all the buildings in Hof van Twente, 350 were empty at the beginning of this year, or 2.1 percent of the total. Nationally, the number of vacant buildings is higher, namely 2.5 percent, but throughout Overijssel there are approximately the same number of vacant buildings as in this municipality. Nationally, the number of vacant homes, as well as the total number of vacant buildings, is declining again after a sharp increase in 2022. A total of 36 million square meters is vacant, which is an area almost as large as the entire municipality of Valkenburg. The bulk of that empty space — more than 20 million square feet — is residential space.
The vacant living space in Hof van Twente amounts to 40,430 square meters, of the 68,550 vacant square meters in total. When determining vacancy rates, CBS does not look at small spaces, such as garages, nor at holiday homes, train stations, prisons and other places that are not intended for (permanent) use. A space is vacant if no one lived there on January 1 of this year, no company was established and if no user is listed in the WOZ register.
