Police deployment around the city bus

NOS Newstoday, 3:05 PMAmended today, 5:30 PM

A man was arrested in the center of Amstelveen for shouting on a bus that he was carrying a package containing explosives. The 67-year-old man from The Hague had boarded at Schiphol Airport.

The police took action after occupants reported another passenger allegedly carrying a ‘suspicious package’. The bus was then followed by the police, including a helicopter.

Hands up

The driver was instructed to park the bus at the bus station in Amstelveen, after which the police cordoned off the area. All travelers had to get out and the man was arrested by an arrest team when leaving the vehicle. Witnesses report to regional broadcaster NH that they saw someone being led out of the bus with his hands up.

Investigation showed that the suspicious package did not contain explosives. The man is suspected of at least making threats. The Royal Military Police will investigate why the man on the bus showed this behavior.
