The 31-year-old victim who was seriously injured in a stabbing on Oudezijds Voorburgwal yesterday died from his injuries. The police let us know. A suspect (55) has been arrested.
The stabbing happened around 8 p.m. at a shelter for homeless people on Oudezijds Voorburgwal. According to bystanders, he was operated on at the scene. “A conflict probably took place in the house involving three men,” describes Guido Oostrom of the Amsterdam police. “The victim is a 31-year-old man from Amsterdam, the suspect is a 55-year-old man, also from Amsterdam.” All those involved were users of the shelter.
According to the police, it was a serious incident. “First aid was also provided to the victim after which he was transported to the hospital,” Oostrom said. “This must be particularly intense for the people who witnessed this.” The victim died in hospital from his injuries.
The Salvation Army did not want to respond on camera. A spokesperson says that too much is still unclear and that the focus is now on supporting staff and visitors. Detectives are still investigating what exactly happened during the incident. The 55-year-old suspect is in custody and will be interrogated tomorrow.
