The average retirement age increased last year to 65 years and 11 months. That is three months higher than in 2022, according to new figures from Statistics Netherlands.

A total of 86,000 employees retired last year. Since 2013, the average retirement age of employees has approximately kept pace with the state pension age. If it rises, the retirement age will also rise. Only in 2021 was the retirement age slightly lower than the year before.

Retired early

74 percent of employees were 65 or older when they retired last year. In 2013 this was 43 percent and in 2003 only 14 percent of employees were 65 years or older at the time of retirement. The fact that so many people stopped working earlier was due to early retirement schemes. Since 2006, they have virtually disappeared.

The number of retirees in the Netherlands remained approximately the same in 2023 as a year before. About 3.3 million people in the Netherlands are retired. The share of retirees among the total population decreased slightly compared to a year earlier. 18.3 percent of the inhabitants of the Netherlands are retired.
