49 people still trapped under rubble after building collapse in South Africa | Abroad

--

The search for 49 people under the rubble of a collapsed building in the South African city of George is in full swing. The building under construction collapsed on Monday due to unknown causes. There were 75 people on site at the time.

Shortly after the building collapsed, a major search was launched. That same day, 26 people were rescued from the rubble. Two of them were no longer alive. Three others died later that afternoon.

At least a hundred rescue workers divided into three teams with dogs are now working on the construction site. Heavy equipment was also used to clear rubble. Contact has been made with some survivors under the rubble, reports said BBC News.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa offered his condolences to the relatives of the victims on Tuesday. He also called for an investigation into the cause of the collapse.

Met enkele overlevenden onder het puin is inmiddels contact gelegd.
