Borussia Dortmund talent Kjell Wätjen is not only nervous about Tuesday evening’s Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain. The eighteen-year-old German must first take a school exam that day before traveling to Paris.

“He is stressed about his exam,” sporting director Sebastian Kehl said at the airport on Monday. “The exam is Tuesday. But then we’ll take him to Paris. He’ll be there on time.”

Borussia Dortmund defends a 0-1 lead in the return match of the semi-finals. Wätjen, who went through Dortmund’s youth academy, did not play in the first game. The midfielder is still waiting for his debut in the Champions League.

Last Saturday, Wätjen played his first match for the main squad. In the league match against Augsburg he completed the ninety minutes. With an assist, Wätjen made an important contribution to the 5-1 victory.

This season, Wätjen mainly plays for Dortmund’s promising team, although he is often allowed to sit on the bench for the main squad. Wätjen records impressive statistics with the Under 19s. This season he scored ten goals and provided nine assists in 22 league games. He recently extended his contract with the current number five in the Bundesliga until mid-2028.

Borussia Dortmund will take on Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday at 9 p.m. The Germans won the first leg at home last week thanks to a goal by Niclas Füllkrug. The other semi-final will be between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich tomorrow at 9 p.m. The first match ended in a 2-2 draw.
