NEC player Tjaronn Chery will not continue his career at Maccabi Haifa next season. The 35-year-old playmaker, who has been playing successfully on a rental basis in Nijmegen since the winter break, is leaving Israel after five years.

Chery moved from China to Maccabi in 2019, where he became a star player and captain. The five-time international from Suriname became champion three times and played with his club in the Champions League. His contract in Israel ran until mid-2025.

Despite his success at Maccabi, Chery went to NEC on loan last winter. The former player of SC Cambuur, FC Twente, RBC Roosendaal, FC Emmen, ADO Den Haag and FC Groningen returned to the Dutch fields.

Chery’s choice to play football in the Eredivisie again had to do with the health of his son. It is unclear whether the NEC playmaker will also play on Dutch soil next season.

Chery immediately became one of the standouts at NEC. After fifteen games, the counter stands at five goals and two assists. He reached the cup final with the club from Nijmegen, which can still displace Ajax from fifth place in the Eredivisie.
