The seizure of a bank account belonging to Sywert van Lienden is lifted. With the more than 100,000 euros that will be released, he can pay for a lawyer. The court in Amsterdam decided this on Tuesday in summary proceedings brought by the fallen TV personality.
Van Lienden asked the judge to lift the seizure of the account in question, so that he can receive legal assistance in his fight against the State and the new board of the Aid Troops Alliance Foundation.
Van Lienden founded the foundation in 2020 to supply millions of face masks to the Ministry of Health at the start of the corona crisis. He stated in the media that he did this without making a profit. But it later turned out that he and his business partners saved millions by ultimately doing the deal with a commercial BV instead of with the foundation.
When this became known, Van Lienden was met with a storm of criticism and was even arrested, after which he disappeared behind bars for a short time. He has also been removed from the foundation’s board. She then started a lawsuit against her former director.
The State also took Van Lienden to court, while the Public Prosecution Service is still investigating the case. In addition, his assets have been seized.
Bank account was previously released
Last year, the Public Prosecution Service released the bank account at ABN AMRO, at the request of Van Lienden. But the foundation immediately had the account seized again, meaning that the former CDA member still had no money for a lawyer who could assist him in his fight against the State and the new board of the foundation.
In the summary proceedings, which were filed on April 22, Van Lienden asked the judge to lift the seizure of the bank account. The judge has now given him the right to do so.
He thought it was more important that the 33-year-old entrepreneur could defend himself than that the foundation could use the money to compensate for the damage it suffered as a result of Van Lienden’s actions.
The ruling in the dispute between Van Lienden, the State and the foundation is still pending.
