VEGHEL/ERP/EINDHOVEN | It is Monday noon and Jelle Deij and Bryan van Deursen are sitting at the kitchen table waiting for a few friendly PSV fans. They are about to be picked up to go to the ceremony of the new national champion. A bit hoarse and a big hangover does not stop the fanatics from traveling to Eindhoven again.

“We are going to celebrate the PSV championship in style,” said the euphoric PSV supporters. You rightly like them diehard PSV fans. If a match is lost, they can all be quite grumpy about it. They have had little trouble with that this Eredivisie season. It only went wrong at NEC. There were no losses in all other matches. With an impressive score of 87 points, PSV was crowned the rightful champion of the Netherlands last Sunday. In Eindhoven, PSV tied a surprisingly strong Sparta to the victory cart. After a hard-fought 4-2 victory, the celebrations broke out. With a nine-point lead over Feyenoord, the Eindhoven team can no longer catch up two games before the end.

It had been a while for PSV. The last championship dates back to 2018, no less than six seasons ago. “That is unworthy of PSV, but this season makes up for a lot. We are by far the best. The discharge is extra great because we had to wait a few years. Eindhoven is again the football capital of the Netherlands,” laughs Van Deursen. Deij walks in, pours a glass of coke and plops down on a kitchen chair.

Peter Bosz
The Philips Stadium exploded on Sunday after the final whistle. Van Deursen, Deij and their mates had already consumed several half liters of Bavaria. Yet they still remember everything well, it is a memory for eternity. Deij: “We really stayed in the stadium for a long time. It was one big party.” According to both PSV players, the architect of the success is head coach Peter Bosz. Deij is full of praise for the 60-year-old trainer: “Bosz has made the difference. PSV plays beautiful, attacking football and unlike other years, they do not stop at a 2-0 lead.”

Party in Eindhoven!

In addition, veteran and captain Luuk de Jong is praised. Van Deursen: “For me he is the MVP (most valuable player). PSV is a close-knit team and De Jong played an important role in this as captain.” Deij adds: “I think that Schouten and Veerman should not be underestimated either.”

Cans of beer
Deij and Van Deursen were in the stadium on Sunday together with a lot of friends. Home games are rarely missed and over the years they have made several trips abroad. The past two days were all about celebration. Will PSV become champion again next year? Deij and Van Deursen look to the future brightly: “PSV has a nice mix of experienced players and talents. With Bosz at the helm, we have a lot of confidence in the coming years, especially with all the money coming in from achieving the Champions League“, they say as the first cans of beer appear. The taxi to Eindhoven is almost here, on to the ceremony. “I still have to get to grips with it,” sighs Van Deursen. “But we are going to celebrate properly one more time,” he promises.

Party in Erp
Kevin van de Laar from Erp is also a big fan of PSV. Traditionally, the PSV championship is commemorated extensively at Schansoord in Erp. This time they will do so next Thursday. Van de Laar says that he will go there anyway. “Then we’ll have the party all over again,” he assures.
Last Sunday and Monday, the former goalkeeper of RKVV Erp, like tens of thousands of other supporters, was in Eindhoven. He looks back on two great days. “This is the most beautiful thing there is. The whole of Eindhoven was red and white. I have to admit that I was quite tense on Sunday before the race, but luckily everything turned out fine. You can see the players and Bosz really enjoying themselves. Goosebumps.”

Stan Verhagen cannot believe his luck.

0-8
Van de Laar has had a season ticket for five years. He visits all home and away games together with a group of fifteen to twenty guests from Erp. “It’s actually a mixed bag, but we have one thing in common and that is PSV. We now all have a close bond. That’s necessary if you spend two and a half hours on the bus to Heereveen together,” Van de Laar explains enthusiastically. He continues: “That was nice, by the way. That turned out to be 0-8 haha! I have never seen PSV play football as well as they did back then. We enjoyed the whole match.”

Statue for De Jong?
For the Erpen resident, Luuk de Jong is the absolute man of the season. “De Jong is one legend. He deserves a statue. At the beginning of the year, there were people who wondered out loud whether he would play. Ricardo Pepi would be better… I think De Jong has silenced everyone. He has been involved in 42 goals. Unprecedented,” concludes Van de Laar.
