On camera images from just before the death of 22-year-old Danny Castledine, it can be seen that both men walked together through the Koggestraat in the center of Amsterdam. Later that night, the victim was found seriously injured on the Singel, a short distance away. Emergency services tried to resuscitate him, but he died at the scene.
Confused and covered in blood
The suspect, Nongo B., was arrested in Amsterdam-Buitenveldert on 1 June around 10:30 am. According to the prosecutor, he was in a confused state at the time and his clothes and shoes were covered in blood. Research shows that that blood was from Castledine.
Cameras on the Singel have recorded the attack, although no persons are recognizable on them. It can be seen that B. only departs from the scene of the crime. Shoe prints that match B.’s shoes were also found at the crime scene.
An autopsy on the body shows that Castledine was killed in a very violent way. The British student was stabbed 30 times in the neck and head; a stab wound to the neck has been fatal to him, according to the judiciary, the other 29 wounds may have contributed to the speed of his death due to the loss of blood.
Personality Research
The motive for the murder is unknown. B.’s lawyer also does not want to say whether he confesses or denies the act. He is willing to cooperate in a personality study, but because the NIFP (Netherlands Institute for Forensic Psychiatry and Psychology) is struggling with a lack of capacity, he is on a waiting list.
The Public Prosecution Service today asked for an extension of the pre-trial detention of B. According to the public prosecutor, no one else can be seen on camera images who may have killed Castledine and there are enough serious objections to his release. The court has extended his pre-trial detention by 90 days.
