is having a ‘tough time’ in Dubai, writes crime journalist John van den Heuvel on Friday The Telegraph. While awaiting his possible extradition to the Netherlands, the 32-year-old Spartak Moscow footballer is staying in a prison in Al Aweer, where conditions are anything but comfortable.

The 50-time Dutch international ‘stays there in a six-person cell and has to sleep in one of the three double bunk beds,” Van den Heuvel says. “In addition to the six ‘lucky ones’ who have their own bed, ten to twenty detainees also sleep on the floor of the cell space,” the crime reporter continues.

Strict regime
Van den Heuvel writes that Promes, who is now required to have his head shaved, is allowed to leave his cell during the day ‘to watch television in a corridor with other prisoners’, but that otherwise ‘there is no recreation or relaxation possible’. Moreover, the footballer receives ‘certainly no preferential treatment’ and his cellmates (‘the vast majority are of Pakistani, Egyptian or Indian origin’) would not even know ‘that they are in the cell with a famous Western footballer.’

Extradition
“Quincy Promes reportedly revealed in prison that he hopes for extradition from Dubai to Russia, so that he can avoid his Dutch sentence for the time being,” Van den Heuvel also reports. It became clear last week that the footballer is also being investigated in Russia, in this case for possible tax evasion. If that country also files an extradition request in Dubai, Promes could avoid prison sentences of a total of 7.5 years (provisionally) imposed in the Netherlands.
