Van Poppel beaten by absent teammate Jakobsen in Tour of Turkey | Cycling

--

Danny van Poppel just failed to win the fourth stage in the Tour of Turkey. The Dutchman finished second behind the Dane Tobias Lund Andresen, a teammate of Fabio Jakobsen.

Van Poppel had to give up a wheel length to Andresen in the bunch sprint. The 21-year-old rider from Team dsm-firmenich PostNL recorded the first professional victory in his career.

Jakobsen, who won the opening stage on Sunday, had already been released earlier in the 138 kilometer ride from Marmaris to Bodrum. This allowed Andresen to do the honors in the sprint on behalf of his team.

On Tuesday, Van Poppel was the first to cross the finish line, but later lost his victory. The thirty-year-old BORA-hansgrohe rider was put back in the results because he had hindered the Italian Giovanni Lonardi.

Thanks to his victory, Andresen takes over the lead in the general classification from Lonardi. Van Poppel occupies fourth place at eight seconds.

The Tour of Turkey lasts until Sunday. The stage race continues on Thursday with a hill stage from Bodrum to Kusadasi.
