Ajax starts the home game against Excelsior on Wednesday in a 4-3-3 system. Branco van den Boomen has lost his starting place. The recovered Jordan Henderson trained this week, but is not in the match selection.

Ajax started against FC Twente a week and a half ago (2-1 win) with five defenders, but had more success in the second half in a 4-3-3 formation. Coach John van ‘t Schip therefore also opts for this system against Excelsior.

Van ‘t Schip has made one change compared to the match with FC Twente. Benjamin Tahirovic replaces Van den Boomen in midfield, who has to sit on the bench.

Henderson is still missing from the match selection. The midfielder missed Ajax’s last four matches due to an injury. Steven Berghuis also trained this week, but is also not part of the selection.

Ajax hopes to stay fifth

Ajax hopes to be at least fifth at the end of the season. Thanks to Feyenoord’s cup win, this position provides a ticket for the preliminary round of the Europa League. Numbers six to nine play play-offs for European football.

Number fifteen Excelsior is still fighting for survival. The team of coach Marinus Dijkhuizen has one point more than RKC Waalwijk with four matches to go. The number sixteen of the Eredivisie plays play-offs for promotion/relegation.

The Eredivisie match between Ajax and Excelsior in the Johan Cruijff ArenA starts at 9 p.m. The match is led by referee Sander van der Eijk.
