Adrian Newey is facing a departure from Max Verstappen’s Red Bull Racing. The BBC and the German Auto Motor und Sport reported this on Thursday. The 65-year-old Briton is considered one of the most successful Formula 1 designers.

According to the BBC, Newey has told Red Bull that he is leaving the team. He was previously associated with Aston Martin, although Ferrari also almost always beckons for his services. It is still unknown who will be Newey’s new employer.

With Newey as designer, Red Bull achieved the status of a top team, after the Englishman previously produced championship cars for Williams and McLaren. In the current successful time with Verstappen at Red Bull, the development of the car is more in the hands of French technical director Pierre Waché and Newey monitors the broad lines as Chief Technical Officer.

Newey’s departure follows a turbulent time within the top management of Red Bull, where a power struggle is underway around team boss Christian Horner and top advisor Helmut Marko. This case, which mainly started after Horner was accused of inappropriate behavior, mainly occurred around the first two Grands Prix of 2024. External calm has now returned to Verstappen’s team.

The Dutchman himself leads the championship after five Grands Prix. Teammate Sergio Pérez is in second place.
