It currently appears that Hedwiges Maduro will leave Ajax after this season. The former football player for Ajax, Sevilla and Valencia, among others, is at the top of the list at Almere City to succeed Alex Pastoor as head coach. Tim van Duijn reports this Football International Friday morning at least. Maduro also had the opportunity to continue in another position within Ajax, but prefers to be head coach at a club in the Eredivisie.

The Amsterdam team bought Maduro away from Almere City after last season. The former Dutch international had written history as Pastoor’s assistant by promoting the polder team to the Eredivisie for the first time in history. Almere City initially hoped to keep Maduro, but ultimately changed tack. The Almeerder native started working at Ajax as an assistant to Maurice Steijn. However, the marriage between Ajax and Steijn was a big disappointment. The man from The Hague resigned at the end of October.

Maduro stayed on, initially as interim coach and then as assistant to John van ‘t Schip. He has recently been linked to being head coach at Jong Ajax, but ‘prefers to stand on his own two feet in the Eredivisie’. Maduro is therefore considered the most important candidate at Almere City to succeed Pastoor. The club from Flevoland also spoke with Rick Kruys recently, ‘but he is now off the list’. The talks between Ajax and Almere City are still ongoing. An agreement is not yet near. “There are still some hurdles to overcome,” it sounds.

Almere City currently occupies twelfth place in the Eredivisie. With three matches still to be played, enforcement is not yet (completely) certain. The lead over number sixteen RKC is currently nine points, but the Waalwijkers will still be in action on Sunday. Almere City still plays against sc Heerenveen (home), Ajax (away) and NEC (home).
