PSG could have done themselves and the fans a nice favor on Saturday evening by winning against low-flying Le Havre, but that did not work out and it was therefore a matter of waiting to see what AS Monaco would do on Sunday evening.
Adi Hütter’s team had to beat Lyon to have a theoretical chance at the title, but in fact the championship dream was already a utopia. Before today, the gap between PSG and Monaco was already twelve points.
Quick opening goal
Yet Monaco still seemed to want to go for that last small chance. Wissam Ben Yedder gave his team the lead within a minute.
But Alexandre Lacazette and Saïd Benrahma soon plunged the red and white into mourning. Within half an hour it was 2-1 to Lyon and Monaco had to score two more goals to postpone PSG’s inevitable title.
It did not work. Ben Yedder scored an equalizer, but six minutes before the end, Malick Fofana scored the third goal for the home team.
This allowed the champagne to be uncorked in Paris for the third year in a row. With three games remaining, Paris Saint-Germain has won its twelfth title in history.
Chance of ‘treble’
PSG still has a chance of winning the treble this season. Borussia Dortmund is the opponent in the first semi-final of the Champions League on Wednesday. On May 25, coach Luis Enrique’s team will face Lyon in the final of the French Cup.
