Former striker Ronaldo is no longer a major shareholder in Cruzeiro. The Brazilian club reports that the company BPW Sports is taking over the share package for an amount of approximately 65 million euros.

Ronaldo helped his old club get out of debt in 2021 by acquiring 90 percent of the shares. Cruzeiro returned to the top flight in 2022. This season the results have been disappointing and some fans hold the former top striker responsible for this.

“Ronaldo and BPW Sports have signed an agreement to acquire all the shares of Tara Sports Brasil,” Cruzeiro said in a statement. “Ronaldo has given the club a new perspective, which has attracted new sponsors.” The Brazilian remains a member of Cruzeiro’s board of directors.

Ronaldo confirmed to Brazilian reporters that he still plans to sell his majority stake (51 percent) in Spanish side Real Valladolid. He saved the second division club from bankruptcy in 2018. “Valladolid is next. Then I’ll take a rest for a while,” Ronaldo said.

The 47-year-old Ronaldo played football in Europe for PSV, FC Barcelona, Internazionale, Real Madrid and AC Milan. He became world champion with the Brazilian team in 1994 and 2002.
