Melvin Boel will leave Feyenoord after this season, the reigning national champion and cup winner announced on Thursday morning via official channels. The 37-year-old Rotterdammer, who has played for the Feyenoord Under 21 group for the past two seasons, is closing the door on Varkenoord after ten years of employment.

Feyenoord says goodbye to Boel through a press release. General manager Dennis te Kloese kicks off this. “I got to know Melvin as a driven and ambitious trainer who tries to get the most out of his group of players. Over the years he has made a good contribution to the development of many Academy players, several of whom have made their debut in Feyenoord 1 in recent years. We wish him lots of fun and success in his further coaching career.”

Boel himself also speaks in the press release. “Looking back, I have a proud feeling that I was able to work at this wonderful club for a long period of time. I am happy with the opportunities Feyenoord has given me, but I also think it will be good for my development to take on a new challenge elsewhere. But first we will do everything we can with the team to bring the season to a good end.”

Boel will soon complete his UEFA Pro training. The young coach will then continue his career elsewhere. Boel has worked at Feyenoord in various roles since 2013. Since the summer of 2022, he has been ultimately responsible for the club’s top promising team. Due to the disappointing performance of Feyenoord Under 21, Boel has been regularly criticized on social media in recent years.

Boel’s departure means that Feyenoord’s club management must find new trainers for the four (!) highest teams of the club. Arne Slot, success coach of the main squad, will almost certainly make a dream transfer to Liverpool. So Boel leaves the Under 21, while Robin van Persie says goodbye to the Stadium club to start working as head coach at SC Heerenveen. Feyenoord has not yet communicated anything about Slot and Van Persie.

Van Persie was appointed as trainer of Feyenoord Under 18 last summer and was also allowed to coach the UEFA Youth League team (Under 19) of the Rotterdam team. Next season he will be in charge of a first team in Friesland for the first time in his career.

Zeb Jacobs, Feyenoord’s new Head of Academy, will immediately be given an important assignment at Varkenoord. The Belgian, who comes over from Rangers FC, will decide on the successors to Boel and Van Persie. Te Kloese will ultimately make a decision about who will succeed Slot at De Kuip.
