Erik ten Hag will remain coach of Manchester United next season. That reports The Athletic Thursday. According to the renowned sports website, Haaksberger is given the benefit of the doubt, given the many disadvantages that would accompany his dismissal. Ajax therefore seems to have to look further for a new head coach.
Ten Hag has been under pressure at Old Trafford for months. United has been eliminated from the Champions League, is sixth in England and has to hope that it will still qualify for the Europa League. The sounds about a congé are getting louder, but The Athletic knows that Ten Hag does not have to fear for his place for the time being.
New co-owner INEOS, headed by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, acknowledges that the previous board made a mess of things. INEOS believes that Ten Hag has not come in under ideal circumstances and has even more reasons to let the manager stay.
So would the Red Devils see insufficient suitable alternatives and dismissal is considered expensive. The latter partly because a successor must also be recruited.
So INEOS is working on a future with Ten Hag still at the helm. The 54-year-old coach still has a contract until mid-2025, and therefore seems to be serving it out now. Despite the miserable season, United still has a chance of winning a top prize. On May 25, the club will play city rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
Ten Hag will not hope for a repeat of last year. He also faced City in the FA Cup final, and United lost 2-1.
Ten Hag did manage to win the EFL Cup last season. Manchester United then defeated Newcastle United 2–0 in the final.
