Verstappen did not expect sprint pole: ‘I thought it was a joke’ | formula 1

--

Max Verstappen had not seen his pole position for the sprint race in Miami coming. The Dutchman did not feel comfortable in his car on Friday.

“I thought it was a joke when I heard I was on pole,” said 26-year-old Verstappen at the Miami International Autodrome. “Of course I would like to receive it. But it didn’t feel good today. We have to look carefully at how that could have happened.”

Verstappen finished fourth in Q1 and Q2, while Lando Norris was fastest in both sessions. The Red Bull driver peaked at the right time in Q3 and stayed ahead of number two Charles Leclerc by a tenth. Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Pérez completed the top three.

“To be very honest: it just felt terrible,” continued Verstappen, who was visibly dissatisfied.

“In Q3 it was very difficult to get the tires working. I hardly improved on the soft tire either. I had confidence and a good feeling in practice, but during qualifying that was completely gone. I’m also very I wonder what happened to the other cars.”

The sprint race in Florida starts on Saturday at 6 p.m. (Dutch time). Qualifying is scheduled for 10 p.m. and the race starts at the same time on Sunday.
