He started the final sprint in a good position, but one of them turned out to be faster. Jonathan Milan only had to admit his superior in the third stage of the Giro d’Italia in Tim Merlier. “He just had a better sprint in his legs,” Milan did not look for excuses afterwards.

The winner of the points jersey in the 2023 Giro looked just after the finish Eurosport back on his sprint, after a very surprising final. “It was very chaotic, with that climb at the end. And also because of the attack of Pogacar and Thomas. It was really painful.”

“It was a very chaotic final. We (referring to his teammates, ed.) lost each other a bit, but we came back together in the last 500 meters. Matteo Trentin started next and we managed to use his speed, but Merlier simply had a better sprint in his legs. I must congratulate him,” Milan shows himself to be a sporting loser.

The Lidl-Trek sprint leader just missed out on a second stage victory in the Giro today, but it is expected that he will get a new chance on Tuesday – on the way to Andora. “I’ll definitely try again tomorrow. Then a new sprint opportunity follows. I enjoyed myself today,” he concludes with a smile.
