Max Verstappen F1: First driver since 1957 to score the most points without winning

--

Max Verstappen has scored the most points during the F1 Grand Prix weekend in Miami, despite finishing second in Sunday’s race. This is the first time that has happened since the 1957 season.

Verstappen experienced a challenging few days at the Miami International Autodrome. The Red Bull Racing driver did not seem satisfied with the balance of the RB20 and the grip in the tires was also lacking. Nevertheless, to his own surprise, he was fastest in the sprint qualifying, after which the now famous words “Lol, what happened to the rest?” followed on the board radio. Verstappen won the Sprint by three seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc and took pole position for the Grand Prix later that Saturday.

Verstappen scores one point more

Verstappen retained the lead at the start of Sunday’s race. Oscar Piastri passed the Ferraris for second place and was then able to keep up with the Dutchman. The gap was only three to four seconds when it was time for the pit stops. Lando Norris stayed out for a long time and was then able to benefit from the Safety Car with a free pit stop. After the restart, the McLaren driver pulled away from the rest of the field to earn his very first victory in Formula 1. However, the young Briton did not score the most points last weekend. Norris had dropped out of the Sprint after contact with Lance Stroll and had therefore only achieved the 25 points from Sunday. Verstappen achieved a total of 26 points in Miami with victory in the Sprint and second position in the Grand Prix.

Shared car

It is the first time since the 1957 British Grand Prix at the Aintree circuit that it is not the winner, but the man who finished second, who scores the most points. In the early years it was not uncommon for Formula 1 drivers to share a car, and this was also the case 67 years ago with Tony Brooks and Stirling Moss. The latter retired halfway through the race with a blown engine. Brooks, not yet fully fit due to a crash at Le Mans a month earlier, was called in and Moss was allowed to take over his Vanwall. After a catch-up race, Moss crossed the line first, but because he had shared the car with another driver he only received half the points. Moss received five points, including a bonus point for the fastest lap. Ferrari driver Luigi Musso, who had completed the race on his own, came second and received the full six points and therefore earned more than winner Moss.
