After Adrian Newey announced his departure from Red Bull Racing, compliments poured in for the designer. Although the 65-year-old Briton’s CV obviously says enough, Newey himself did not expect all those trumpets.
The role of the designer is mainly one behind the scenes. The Briton was frequently seen on the starting grid, inspecting other cars. Yet success mainly goes to the team and the driver and Newey is fine with that. Since it was announced that the Briton is leaving Red Bull Racing, his role has mainly been put in the spotlight and he did not quite see all that recognition coming.

Newey surprises
In conversation with Sky Sports F1 Newey responds to all the compliments he has received. “Surprised, to be honest. I have been doing the work I always wanted to do since I was young. That is my passion and I enjoy working with the drivers, the engineers and the team, all the other mechanics, the factory, etc.,” he explains. For the Brit, it is simply his passion, which he has been able to turn into his job.

Newey never thinks about it
Yet it cannot be denied that Newey is very successful in his expertise and he is being patted on the back for that. Yet Newey remains fairly down-to-earth about it, because he does not do it for the applause. “That [werken met het team red.] is what gets me up and what motivates me. The other side of the story is something that belongs, but that I never think about. So it was a bit of a shock and a surprise,” Newey said.
