The Golden Ball that Diego Maradona received after the 1986 World Cup will soon be auctioned in Paris. The French auction house Aguttes announced this on Tuesday.
Maradona was awarded the trophy after being named the best player of the tournament. As captain, he guided Argentina to the world title in Mexico. The team won the final 3-2 against West Germany.
Missing for decades
The Golden Ball was missing for decades and was found at an auction in Paris in 2016. Due to “the unique character” of the trophy, the auction house expects the Golden Ball to fetch several million euros.
The goal that Maradona scored in the quarter-final victory against England (2-1) is famous. The small midfielder scored both goals and put the opening goal past the English goalkeeper with his hand.
Controversial goal
The controversial goal is known as ‘The Hand of God’. His second goal, scored after a dribble in his own half, was later named goal of the century. In 2022, the shirt with which Maradona is said to have scored the goal was auctioned for 8.4 million euros.
