FC Utrecht extended the expiring contract of Nick Viergever by one year on Thursday. It is already the third time this week that contract news has come from the cathedral city.

In recent days, Jens Toornstra and Vasilios Barkas preceded the 34-year-old Viergever. FC Utrecht used an option in the contract of 35-year-old Toornstra and 29-year-old Barkas to extend until the summer of 2025.

Viergever will enter his third year at FC Utrecht next season. The defender came over from SpVgg Greuther Fürth in the summer of 2022. He has played 24 league matches this season and is the captain of coach Ron Jans’ team.

Before his period in Germany, Viergever played in the shirt of Sparta Rotterdam, AZ, Ajax and PSV. He also has three international matches to his name. In August 2012 he made his debut under national coach Louis van Gaal.

In the last two games of the season, Viergever still has a chance of fifth place in the Eredivisie with FC Utrecht. Otherwise, the club will wait for the play-offs for a place in the second qualifying round of the Conference League.
