Dominic Thiem will retire from tennis at the end of this season. The 2020 US Open winner has been struggling with a wrist injury for some time, which has prevented him from performing at top level.

“It’s not the way I wanted it to be, but I’ve thought about this moment for a long time,” says 30-year-old Thiem in a video on Instagram, in which he announces his decision to quit.

“I’ve had success and the adventure has been incredible. I’m very grateful for that. But I’ve come to the conclusion that this is the only right decision. I’m excited for what’s to come.”

At his peak, Thiem was number three in the world. The US Open win four years ago is his highlight. Furthermore, the Austrian reached the final of the Australian Open in 2018 and was in the Roland Garros final in 2018 and 2019.

Due to his persistent wrist injury, Thiem has dropped considerably in the world rankings. Two weeks ago, the current number 117 fell in the qualifications of the Madrid tournament.

Thiem’s last victory at ATP level dates from more than a month ago, when he started the tournament in Estoril, Portugal, with a victory.
