During a new episode of the podcast series Willem&Wessel from the Algemeen Dagblad Willem van Hanegem once again gives his unvarnished opinion about his favorite club. This time it is about the succession of Arne Slot and the recent revival of Santiago Gimenez in the match against PEC.
Van Hanegem does not want to be too quick about Slot’s performance at Feyenoord, who has become extremely popular with his way of football since his arrival in De Kuip. “I also thought it was terrible before that. That’s Dick’s way of playing. But he has also done well. Then you get a different trainer and that other trainer will play a little more attacking, or a lot more attacking. He has a lot of players. bought it, nice players too. Then it is very logical that we all liked it again?”
De Kromme then analyzes the performance of the departing trainer. “The first year was very nice, I thought, the way he played. The second year you became champion, playing very reasonable to well at times. I thought the last season was one of the least. What does the trainer say: ‘ Yes, but we have more points,” he grumbles.
Van Hanegem is not concerned about the decision to leave Rotterdam after this season. “It’s not like I think ‘God damn it, now the trainer is leaving and that’s so bad’. Then another one comes along.” He also already has a name in mind: Mark van Bommel. “Because given his way of playing and also his character, he belongs to Feyenoord,” says the Feyenoord icon about the current Royal Antwerp coach, who was vomited by the crowd in De Kuip during his time as a PSV player. “People like that love it. Van Hanegem also discusses Santiago Gimenez, who once again put in a good match against PEC Zwolle. “I think that if he had played like he did at the beginning of the season and last year, you would have had a very good chance of being in the European last eight and you would also have been much, much closer to PSV, perhaps even champion.”
One good performance against PEC cannot necessarily convince Van Hanegem. “Every time he could have scored two goals within ten, twenty minutes, in his normal way. All those matches I saw, it was really sad, the last six months.
