Samsung’s May update includes a number of important security improvements for many Galaxy phones and tablets. We look at what the new patch does and which devices are eligible for the update. Also, the May patch might not be the only update you get this month.

Samsung update May 2024

The month of May is a busy month this year. A large number of Samsung phones have the regular security patch. But upgrades to One UI 6.1 with or without Galaxy AI will also soon roll out around the world. And so we list the various expected updates and upgrades below – so that you can continue to see the forest for the trees, hopefully. But let’s start at the beginning.

The May patch again consists of two parts. Google’s half this time includes 30 improvements for the Android system itself. Three of them are called ‘critical’: two have an as yet unknown content, the third is intended for phones with a Qualcomm processor. Consider, for example, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, the Galaxy S23 series, and the Galaxy Z series.

There are also 25 improvements for Samsung’s own software this month. Among other things, the security of the Telephonefunction itself, the camera, the Secure Folder and the Setup wizard that you use to set up your phone in the beginning. The only ‘high priority’ fix concerns the bootloader of phones with a MediaTek processor. Consider, for example, the Galaxy A15 and Galaxy A34.

Which phones will get the May update?

The phones that will anyway receive the May patch are the devices that are updated every month. A number of these will also receive the major One UI 6.1 upgrade with Galaxy AI in May. We will mention this separately.

Additionally, some models may also get One UI 6.1 without Galaxy AI. We also indicate that here. Whether the May patch will arrive at the same time as One UI 6.1, or as a separate update, is not yet clear. Please note that some phones will receive two different updates this month.

Or three, because there is a chance that some devices will also receive the recent ‘4G update’. This is a small update that you won’t notice much of. But if your phone hasn’t received it yet, it may still happen.

In any case, the patch will come to:

Devices that receive updates every quarter

Both the 4G and 5G models of the Galaxy A52 are now on the list of phones that receive quarterly updates. Because they have been updated quite recently at this point, we do not expect a newer patch this month.

Devices with quarterly updates that require a newer patch in May include:

Other models have a patch that is still recent enough – think of the Galaxy S20 or the Galaxy A33 and A34. Or they are on the list of phones that Samsung updates every six months, such as the Galaxy A12, A22, or Galaxy A41. For this last group it is impossible to predict exactly when they will receive new updates.

In the tablet field, we see that the Galaxy Tab S8 will probably receive One UI 6.1 with Galaxy AI this month. The various Galaxy Tab S6 Lite and Galaxy Tab A9 models are due for a new patch.

When?

As you undoubtedly know, Samsung does not have a fixed order for rolling out new updates. The phones and tablets mentioned above will get the May patch sometime over the next few weeks. We cannot predict exactly when. We will notify you for various commonly used devices as soon as the update is actually available in the Netherlands. So keep an eye on our overview of all Samsung updates in the Netherlands – and let us know below when the May update arrives on your phone.
