When it comes to new TVs and monitors, OLED is worth considering. This image technology significantly enriches your screen with a better color range, higher contrast and, above all, deep black levels. The biggest disadvantage is the price. Samsung is responding to this with its new line of OLED televisions, but they are still not really affordable.
Samsung’s new S85D series consists of a number of OLED TVs, the price of which is around 3200 euros for a 77-inch model. That is a considerable amount, and that is why Samsung also offers a smaller model of 55 inches, which will cost around 1600 euros. That can’t be called completely affordable, but it is significantly cheaper than the OLED TVs in Samsung’s top line S95D and the S90D series. The new S85D series was announced today in the US, but the exact Dutch prices are not yet known.
Upscaling
With OLED you can assume that the black levels in particular are much deeper. This is because each individual pixel literally turns on or off, instead of simply turning a dark color. What is remarkable about the smaller 55-inch model is that it contains many of the same functions as the larger (read: more expensive) models. The 55-inch version would still have the same NQ4 AI Gen2 Processor, 4K AI Upscaling capabilities and Pantone-validated colors. Pantone is the leading company when it comes to colors.
In addition, you can still count on Dolby Atmos for the sound, and Samsung TV Plus and Samsung Gaming Hub for the content. Furthermore, Samsung claims that the TV has a “bold look” due to its contoured design.
HDMI 2.1
The entry-level model also has Motion Xcelerator technology to make movements as smooth as possible: ideal for watching sports, for example. You can also connect 4 HDMI 2.1 cables, each cable supporting 4K at 120 Hz.
But that’s where the similarities end. That refresh rate is one of the differences with the S90 line, which offers no less than 144 Hz. These models are mainly intended for gamers, to minimize delays as much as possible, and also offer OLED HDR+ for extra brightness and contrast, and Motion Xcelerator Turbo+. However, this S90D series starts from around 2400 euros and will therefore not be equally popular for everyone.
Type of OLED screen may differ
Samsung does not say which type of OLED the new S85D televisions use. The high-end S95D series uses QD-OLED panels made by Samsung itself, while some S90D series models include W-OLED panels sourced from LG. With other of the new TVs, Samsung does not say exactly which OLED panel you get.
