TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – President-elect Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and Vice President-elect Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) with a three-man delegation from a key subcommittee of the United States House of Representatives on Thursday (March 28 ).

Subcommittee on Intelligence and Special Operations Chair Jack Bergman and members Don Norcross and Jimmy Panetta were meeting with leaders including President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) during their March 27-29 visit. At the meeting Thursday, Lai thanked them for showing their support for Taiwan by taking concrete steps at a crucial time, per Radio Taiwan International (RTI).

The president-elect said he hoped Taiwan would continue to receive US assistance to strengthen peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific and the Taiwan Strait. The country would also play a positive and active role in promoting regional prosperity, he said. In his response to Lai, Bergman said he hoped Taiwan would maintain a strong maritime policy to counter ever more aggressive behavior by China.

Lai and Hsiao are scheduled to be sworn in on May 20. Hsiao served as Taiwan’s top representative in the US until being chosen by Lai as his running mate for the Jan. 13 presidential election. She recently visited the US and several European countries, including the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Poland, and Belgium.
