More than 100 arrests after Extinction Rebellion blockade of A10 near Amsterdam | Domestic

--

The police have arrested more than a hundred Extinction Rebellion activists. The group managed to block the A10 near the former ING office in Amsterdam during King’s Day. About thirty people have been arrested for that offense. The remaining arrests were for refusing to leave.

According to police, eight vehicles managed to block the highway at two locations, after which demonstrators entered the highway. The police speak of a “life-threatening action” and arrested “around thirty people” for these blockades. They are suspected of deliberately causing danger on the highway. This group also has to stay in jail longer. The vehicles involved have been seized.

The Amsterdam triangle (mayor, police and justice) had already called the blockade on King’s Day irresponsible and had therefore banned the action. The other ninety arrests were therefore people who refused to leave. This group is now free again.

The action group demands that ING immediately stop financing the fossil industry. An Extinction Rebellion spokesperson afterwards called the action “greatly successful”.

The last attempt to block the A10 on March 30 failed. In February and December, XR managed to demonstrate on the Amsterdam highway.
