A 58-year-old Sneker who hit a local on the head several times with a stick on January 22 has been sentenced to two months in jail by the police judge.

The suspect stated on Thursday afternoon that he, in the company of his brother, visited an acquaintance from whom he still owed money because he had looked after the dog when the acquaintance was in prison.

There was also the man on the couch who allegedly threatened the suspect on social media and called him a pedophile. “I told him to stop with the Facebook thing. Then he stood up.”

‘Bitten by the dog’

According to the suspect, the man had approached him in a threatening manner and therefore hit him with the stick. Against the right upper arm and not against the head. “He grabbed one of those cast iron racks from the gas stove and wanted to hit me with it. Then he hit his head on the kitchen cupboard. And he was also bitten by the dog.”

“I didn’t know I would find him there,” the suspect emphasized. He said he had the stick with him because he felt unsafe. “If I had wanted to do harm, I could have visited him at home a long time ago.”

Incriminating statements

His brother had told the police that the suspect knew that his opponent was at the scene. The host, the victim and another witness made incriminating statements about the suspect. He allegedly charged at the victim and then hit him on the head several times with the wood. “We will kill you,” the brothers allegedly shouted.

About the latter witness, the suspect said: “He couldn’t have seen anything, because he was hiding in a cupboard.” The suspect’s brother is also said to have hit the victim with a piece of wood. It must occur at a later time.

Attempted burglary

The suspect confessed to an attempted burglary on October 8 last year in Havenzijstraat in Sneek. He used a crowbar to break open a barn door to gain entry.

He was recognized on camera images of the resident. The suspect had heard that there was copper wire in the shed and he wanted to steal it and then sell it, but he could not find it.

Sufficient evidence

Public prosecutor Riemke van der Zee saw sufficient evidence for assault, threats and the attempted burglary. She demanded a prison sentence of six months, four of which were conditional, and a probationary period of three years.

Judge Willem Sikkema also considered the charges proven. He stated that the suspect’s story about the assault was not confirmed by the other people present. “I realize that some things had happened. That there was a conflict, but that is no justification for violence.” He received a prison sentence of four months – two suspended – and a probationary period of three years.
