That’s how expensive it is to replace the battery in an electric car

--

You might not think it, but the first generation of the Tesla Model S is already twelve years old. This means that the warranty has already expired for four years. Other EVs are also starting to reach the point where the car brand no longer replaces your electric motor or battery pack for free. That is why it is useful to know the price of replacing the battery of your electric car, if that ever becomes an issue.

The German Autobild looked this up. It is immediately noticeable that car brands do not like to share the price tag of a new battery. According to the brands, this is because a complete replacement is often unnecessary. In most cases, defective cells or multi-cell modules could be removed and replaced, rather than installing an entirely new battery. Then the costs for the brand and customers are lower than a complete replacement. However, we would like to know ‘just in case’ what the price per electric car is when you have the battery replaced.

Various brands do not provide transparency

Tesla, Audi, Fiat and Opel all do not want to release figures to the German medium. This has several reasons. For example, Opel says that there are no prices because completely new batteries are never installed. In all cases, the Opel batteries are overhauled. Audi says that there are prices, but that the brand prefers not to share them.

Volkswagen does reveal itself, but cannot give an exact price because, according to the brand, prices fluctuate greatly. For an ID.3 or ID.4, a new battery costs between 10,000 and 15,000 euros. At least a quarter of the purchase price of an ID.3. For cars on the MQB platform, such as the e-Golf and e-Up, you will spend between 10,000 and 20,000 euros.

The price of a new battery for your electric Mercedes

The one that provides full disclosure is Mercedes. For example, you pay 21,375.12 euros for a new battery pack for a Mercedes EQE. Also about a quarter of the purchase price. With the EQA you are 15,209.22 euros poorer. For the EQB, the brand asks 18,739.50 euros. A new battery for your EQC costs 28,516.68 euros, for the EQS 19,603.12 euros and for the EQS SUV 29,257.80 euros. With the latter, it is better to wait until the storage capacity of the battery has dropped below 70 percent. At that time the replacement is free.

Mercedes relationship Smart also announces the prices. A new battery pack for the Smart EQ Fortwo and ForFour costs 6,537.92 euros. This makes the price of a new battery for this electric car lower than that of a Dacia Spring. You pay 6,769.65 euros for this. Honda also does not charge a lot for a battery in the Honda e. You pay 7,283 euros for it, which is less than 20 percent of the new price.

Renault gives indicative prices

For the time being, Renault only reports a target price for a new battery for one of their electric cars. The brand does this for the Zoe, Kangoo ZE, Twingo Electric (no, not the new one) and Twizy. For the first three models you pay approximately 9,000 euros for fresh energy cells. You pay 4,000 euros for the small Renault Twizy.

Nissan goes a little further. This brand distinguishes between the different battery packs for the Leaf. For a new 40-kWh battery you have to transfer 10,306 euros to the brand. Do you have a larger 62-kWh battery in your Leaf? Then a new version costs 15,516 euros. With the larger battery pack you pay about a third of the new price.

Other Asian brands are also throwing around large sums of money for new batteries. For example, Hyundai asks 20,176.78 euros for a 100-kWh battery for the electric Kona and even 33,771.68 euros for the 150-kWh version. For the Ioniq, a new battery costs 20,176.78 euros. At Kia the prices are a bit more reasonable. For example, the brand charges 10,364.90 euros for a new EV6 battery and 6,940.08 euros for that of the e-Niro.

Is your Volvo battery broken? Then do not buy a new battery

If you are one of the many Dutch owners of a Volvo XC40 Recharge, you probably also want to know what a new battery costs, just in case. Volvo announces that a new battery for the electric XC40 – now called EX40 – costs 37,854 euros. Then we would advise you to save some more and buy a completely new car for at least 45,995 euros.
