The United Nations suspended relief work in Gaza overnight for at least 48 hours. The organization wants to evaluate safety after seven aid workers were killed by an Israeli airstrike on Monday evening.

The suspension already took effect on Tuesday. “As famine approaches, humanitarian personnel and supplies must be able to move freely and safely across the Gaza Strip,” a spokesperson said on Wednesday. During the day, the UN World Food Program continues its activities. The UN has long complained about the obstacles to the distribution of aid in Gaza.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday that it did not want to give up its difficult mission in Gaza despite the deaths of the seven aid workers.

There has been an international reaction to the death of the aid workers, including a Pole. Poland summoned the Israeli ambassador on Wednesday. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Wednesday called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s response “insufficient” and “unacceptable.” Netanyahu previously spoke of a “tragic incident” that would be investigated, but he did not apologize.
